Reflection from a Past Volunteer

Rachel Beaney (uThinc Manager, 2009 – 2010)

I was given a pretty huge task in 2009: create a Speakers’ Bureau. I didn’t even know what a Speakers’ Bureau was! But, step-by-step, I gave it a go.

Project Australia has taught me that I know more than I think I know and that I can do things I never thought possible – even if I don’t know how when I start. It’s taught me that I can be creative and practical in ways I never thought I could be; that I can manage people and processes, and lead and teach. It’s been empowering, humbling, hectic and hopeful.

I’ve never worked in a start-up organisation, especially one which is virtual. We’re all working toward a dream – which at times can be both inspiring and frustrating in it’s organic nature. Working with uThinc, I haven’t just learnt how to work with volunteers – I’ve also learnt how to encourage people to chase their dreams to create a real change in this world. And, probably most importantly, I’ve learnt just what a Speaker Bureau is – and how important someone sharing their experiences can be.

Our thanks to:

Project Australia would not exist were it not for our wonderful team of volunteers. Although we have regular team meetings in person and via Skype, most of the work our volunteers do is from their own homes. This makes Project Australia an ideal volunteering opportunity for anyone who would like to fit their contribution around irregular work and study hours.

Please note that we welcome unsolicited volunteer applications. Please attach an up to date resume and a letter of introduction letting us know what skills and resources you can contribute and what you hope to gain by volunteering with us.
